The Refugee GreenSpace Initiative is a working group that helps organize gardening projects for refugees and asylum seekers in Norway. Our work focuses on skills development, health, and partnerships. We believe that refugee gardening initiatives generate sharing knowledge and skills beyond agriculture, thus building the capacity of both individuals and communities. This contributes to a healthier and happier life for refugees.

There are many benefits to gardening including fresh fruit and vegetable intake, physical activity, skill building, creation of greenspaces, stress reduction, and improving the social well-being of participants through strengthening social connections.

 vision

We envision a world in which all refugees and asylum seekers have the opportunity and resources to reach their full potential.

  • Respect diversity and culture.
  • Equity is assured through ethical practice.
  • Partnerships are important as we work together with refugees to fulfill their identified needs. We encourage partnerships across disciplines, sectors, and borders.
  • Meet the needs of our beneficiaries, funders and partners.

mission

Our mission is to cultivate partnerships between individuals, communities, organizations, the private sector, and government in order to improve lives of asylum seekers and refugees through gardening and skills development initiatives.

About us

Projects

We believe that refugee gardening initiatives generate sharing knowledge and skills beyond agriculture, thus building the capacity of both individuals and communities.

Our values

We are developing the following projects:

  • Refugee Gardens: We plan to establish urban agriculture greenspaces throughout Norway. These projects aim to transform underutilized landscapes.
  • Skills Development Workshops: We believe this project is about more than growing tomatoes. We are dedicated to providing skills development or establishing an environment where refugees can gain skills that are transferable to the Norwegian labor market. Skills would include management, evaluation, etc.
  • Cultural/Language Exchange: Along with nutrition, gardening, and skills development the garden provides the ultimate platform for cross-cultural exchanges.
